Road to the Civil War

  • Cotton Gin creation

    Eli Whitney created the cotton gin for a more faster cotton production in 1789. This helped the Southern economy and also accelerated the cotton production. However, slaves are still required to pick out the crops from the ground, later on transmitted to the corn gin for mass production. This led to the Civil War because of how slaves are still a part of the Southern economy, which became a nation wide issue.
  • Abolishing Slavery

    States from New England to Pennsylvania began to free slaves overtime starting in 1804. South however, maintained their ground and kept their economy. This is an event that causes several compromises because the nation want to maintain the equal states amount, between free and slave states.
  • Free states and Slave States

    On 1819, there are 11 free states and 11 slave states.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri joined as a slave state and Maine is added as free state. An imagery line on the southern border of Missouri, the South of the line is accepted as a slave section, and the North of the line is joined as a free section. This is a crucial part of the slavery issue, since the Compromise of 1850 enraged the Northerners even more, advancing into the Civil War since some rihts had been taken away already during this compromise for the Northerners.

    Liberia is founded by James Monroe in order to give the slaves a colony to live in.
  • The Liberator

    The Liberator is a very influential antislavery newspaper created by William Garrison in 1831. The North are tempted to abolish slavery even more since the antislavery newspaper made the Northerners more determine to end slavery.
  • Nat Turner

    Led a major revolt in 1831 as a Southern slave planter.
  • Frederick Douglas

    Frederick is a huge abolitionist who escaped to New England. He knows how to read and write.
  • Frederick Acts

    He made the North Star magazine and spoke in lots of places.
  • Free-soil party created

    Members of whigs and democrats met in Buffalo, NY. Formed the free-soil party in 1848.
  • Free vs slave states

    15 free and 15 slave states in 1849.
  • Cotton Production

    The help of Cotton Gin increased cotton yearly production from 6000 in 1792 to over 2 million in 1850.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    5 parts of the Compromise of 1850
    1.allow California enter as a free state
    2.Divided Mexican Cession into territories of Utah and New Mexico, slavery decided by sovereignty
    3.Banned slave trades in Washington DC< capital of US, but cannot control slave trade of slave states
    4.Included a strict fugitive law.
    5.Settled border dispute between Texas and New Mexico.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Most persuasive antislavery newspaper ever written published. The North are more determined to abolish slavery, just like what The Liberator had done to influence the Northerners. However, the South found this shocking and unbelievable, because they opposed the scenery within the story, and they think slaves respect the slaveowners, believing what the story had told is absolutely false.
  • Gather of Republican Party

    Groups of members from the Free-soil party, democrats, and the whigs gathered in Michigan in 1854 to form the Rep. Party.
  • Bill for Government in Nebraska Territories

    Stephen Douglas set up the bill for the Nebraska Territories in 1854. The split between Nebraska and Kansas, leading to raids and proslavery settlers from Missouri will be able to get the terriers and turn them into slave states from illegal votes during the popular sovereignty.
  • Lawmakers in Kansas and Bleeding Kansas.

    Election held in 1855 for Kansas lawmakers. This led to the Bleeding Kansas act, raids were set out for either side, which ultimately led up to the Jon Brown;s raid, causing the tension to rose and polarizing the North from the South.
  • Proslavery Raids

    Destroyed homes and Free soil party newspaper in Kansas. John Brown wanted revenge, so his Creek and arsenal events were done because of how the proslavery raids were set out in Kansas.
  • Dred Scott vs Sandford

    A case that led to the outrage of North because of supreme court injustice decision against Dred Scott, an enslaved slave. Now that the Supreme Court said that slavery could spread to the Western colonies, the North were completely outraged and triggered, which eventually led to the polarization and the Civil War.
  • Challenge of Abe Lincoln

    Lincoln challenged Douglas in 1858 for senate. Douglas won by a thin margin but he later on ran against Douglas again for president.
  • The Election of 1860

    Lincoln is elected president at the election of 1860. The Southerners are threatened to secede since they dont trust in Lincoln's words, and believed that slavery would be destroyed along with the South as well.
  • Secession

    South Carolina seceded in 1860 from the Union after Lincoln was elected president.
  • John Brown's raid

    John Brown led his antislavery campaign from Kansas to the East. He was later captured during the raid and was sentenced to death in 1859. North thinks that John Brown is a martyr because of how he died for what he believed in. The South believed that he is a terrorist, but after seeing what the North had done after Brown's death, they feared they would be destroyed, leading to secession and the Civil War.
