Compromise of 1820
The compromise was made to keep an equal amount of anti-slavery states and pro-slavery states. This satisfied both parties, but the North still wanted to abolish slavery. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso was never passed, but it banned slavery in the newer states. This greatly seperated congress, angering the South. This caused many problems for later. -
Free Soil Party
The Free Soil Party was may in 1848, this was to help prevent slavery. They were against slavery and thought all men should be equal, no matter the color of your skin. The new party was targeted at the South, this made them angry as now there was a party in congress against them. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 allowed for California to be a free state, and for Washington D.C. to stop slave trade as long as the fugitive slave act was put into place. This angered Northerners as they didn't want to be in charge. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act made it so that if a northerner didn't turn in a runaway slave they could be fined or jailed. This also gave slave catchers a right to take any slave without a warrant and sometimes they took back free slaves in the process. This made Southerners angry as Northerners didn't always follow the rules. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Territory for slavery, this would repeal Missouri, many people rushed into the states to vote. The North and South created 2 capitols in Kansas. Both sides were angry as neither one would agree on who won. -
Bleeding Kansas
John Brown and sons killed 5 men that were pro-slavery. This was only one act of many violent crimes to emphasizes on slavery. The South was very angry about the attacks, this sparked a new hatred. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was in a free state with his master, and after he returned to the south he petitioned for freedom. He was given this, but his owner refused and supreme court ordered him a slave due to the reason that he was not a true citizen. This was one of the last straws before the civil war. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Lincoln was from the North, as Douglas the South. They both had different views on slavery, but Lincoln never wanted to abolish slavery. This gave new hope to the North of someone in office who wanted teh best. -
John Brown's Rebellion
John Brown and a group of slaves raided Harpers Ferry. They were captured and hanged, but the rebellion scared the South. The North celebrated John Brown's death for his courage, agriviating the South. -
Election of 1860
There were 4 different campaigns, two in the south and two in the North. Lincoln won precidency causing obsticles for the future. This agrivated the South causing them to leave the union. -
The South Left The Union
South leaving caused great fear in the North. The Civil war was started to bring back the South into the Union, because they didn't believe that the country should be seperated.
