Treaty of Paris of 1763
The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War and titled the British colonies as winners. It also marked the end of France as a power in North America and divided the continent between Great Britain and Spain with the Mississippi River marking the boundary.

Proclamation of 1763
King Gorge III issued the Proclamation of 1763 after the French and Indian War. This kept the colonists from going past the Appalachian Mountains and 10,000 troops made sure no one violated the proclamation.

Stamp Act
The Stamp Act placed a tax on almost all printed material in the colonies and the British officials had to stamp everything. This included newspapers, pamphlets, wills and playing cards.

Declaratory Act
This law allowed Parliament to tax and make decisions for all British colonies. “In all cases.”

Townshend Acts
These acts applied taxes toward all imported goods including; glass, tea, paper, and lead. Because of this, the colonists learned how to make or to live without any of these things. Without intending to the King and Parliament pushed the colonies toward economic independence.

Boston Massacre
Townspeople threw sticks and stones at the British soldiers causing one to be knocked down. The British open fired and killed Crispus Attucks and four other colonists.

Tea Act
The Tea Act allowed the East India Company to bypass colonial merchants and sell directly to shopkeepers at a lower price. However, the colonists thought it was another attempt to control them because the East India Company an advantage over colonial merchants.

Boston Tea Party
In response to the Tea Act, Sam Adams and the Boston Sons of Liberty dressed up like Indians, snuck onto three ships that arrived in Boston Harbor during the night, and threw 342 chests of tea overboard.

1st Continental Congress
55 delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss problems with Britain. The colonies each sent their major political leaders to attend the Congress. They drafted a statement of complaints and asked Parliament to repeal 13 acts that violated colonists’ rights. Also, they voted to boycott all British goods and to begin forming militias.

Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were made to punish Boston after the Boston Tea Party because Parliament and King George III felt like they were losing control of the colonies. The Intolerable Acts violated the colonists’ rights as English citizens. These laws closed Boston Harbor, banned town meetings, allowed British officers to be tried in other colonies or in Britain when accused of crimes, and forced the colonists to house soldiers in their own home.

Midnight Ride: Revere, Cheswell, Dawes
A group of British soldiers were seen in Boston. Paul Revere, Wentworth Cheswell, and William Dawes rode to Lexington to warn Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and the rest of the militiamen.

Lexington and Concord
When the British soldiers reached Lexington there were 70 militiamen waiting to fight them. When they were done fighting, eight men were dead and by the time the British troops reached Concord, most of the gunpowder had been moved.

2nd Continental Congress
Many of the same people from the 1st Continental Congress came back for the 2nd Continental Congress and some newcomers were; Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. John Hancock was named president of the 2nd Continental Congress. Everybody chose George Washington to be the army’s commander.
