French and Indian War
The French and Indian war was fought from 1754-1763 between the British and French in North America. The Treaty of Paris 1763 ended this war. -
Proclamation Line
The proclamation line followed after Great Britain´s acquisition of the French territory in North America. This occurred after the end of the French and Indian War, and it forbade all settlement past a line drawn along the Appalachian Mountains. -
Quartering Act
This act required colonists to provide the British soldiers with food and shelter. As time went along, and resentment grew, the basis for the third amendment to the Constitution was in effect. -
Stamp Act
British Parliament passed the Stamp Act on March 22nd, 1765. All American colonists were affected by the Act and were required to pay a tax on every single piece of paper they used. -
Declaratory Act
Declaration that the British Parliament began that was involved with the annulment of the Stamp Act. This Act said that the British Parliament had the same taxing authority as there was in America. At this time, Parliament had been taxing the colonies for revenue in the Sugar Act. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend Act imposed tax on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea that were imported from the colonies. Many American colonists thought of the Acts as an abuse of power, resulting in limitation on imports from Britain. -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers began fire in Boston and killed 5 American colonists. -
Committee of Correspondence
Called on the colonies to send delegates to a colonial congress. They were called upon to discuss what they needed to do next about the Intolerable Acts. -
Boston Tea Party
There was a direct priest in Boston by colonists against the Tea tac the British government created. Boston Patriots dressed as mo-hawk Indians, took tea from three British ships in the Boston Harbor and dumped 342 containers into the Harbor. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act lowered the taxing on British tea. This made it cheaper than the non-British tea that the colonists had been smuggling for months. -
Coercive Acts
These acts came about when King George lll was angry and decided to punish the colonies. What occurred was, England shut down Boston Harbor and stopped allowing elections. It also expanded the Quartering Act. -
Common Sense
Thomas Paine said the Britain violated the colonists natural rights and was an illegitimate government. This resulted in a republic government, where power comes from the people and they elected officials, a king no longer chose. During this time, independence also became much more popular. -
"Shot Heard Around the World"
The "Shot Heard Around the World" is considered by many the very start to the American Revolution. 400 men at Concord attacked and chased the British back to Boston. In the midst of it all. they killed 99 troops, resulting in local militias to surround British in Boston. -
Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776. The declaration states that the reasons the North American colonies sought independence. The king also interfered with the colonists right to self-government and a fair judicial system.
