  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Definition- An armed rebellion that took place 1676-1677 by Virginia settlers led by Nathaniel Bacon against the rule of Governor William Berkeley. Cause- Governor Berkeley's refusal to retaliate for a series of Native American attacks on frontier settlements. Effect- The main result of Bacon's rebellion was that indenture servitude ended and slavery develop
  • Great Awakening

    Definition- A series of religious revivals in the North American British colonies during the 17th and 18th Centuries Cause- A movement wanted to alter religious beliefs, practices and relationships in the American colonies Effect- later did happen that also swept British and Thirteen Colonies betwwen the 1730-1704
  • French and Indian War

    Cause- Began due to a conflict between England and France over control of the Ohio River Valley. Definition- A series of military engagements between Britain and France in North America between 1754 and 1763 Effect- The British victory had a great impact on the British Empire. Firstly, it meant a great expansion of British territorial claims in the New World. But the cost of the war had greatly enlarged Britain's debt
  • Albany Plan of Union

    Cause- A plan to place the British North American colonies under a more centralized government and aimed at a formation of a strong union of the colonies under one single government and direction Definition- A plan to create a unified government for the Thirteen Colonies Effect- The Albany plan of Union failed because the colonies were afraid of losing their own autonomy or self government. The British also dropped the plan because they wanted to make the management of the colonies simple.
  • Proclamation Line of 1763

    Cause- British leaders feared that more fighting would take place on the frontier if colonists kept moving onto American Indian lands Definition- A law that prohibited American colonists from settling west of Appalachia Effect- This law banned British settlement west of the Appalachian Mountians. It also ordered settlers to leave the upper Ohio River Valley.
  • Pontiac’s Rebellion

    Cause- The tribes involved in Pontiac's rebellion believed that the French treated them with honor, hospitality, equality and respect as opposed to the British who believed they were superior to the Indians Definition- Pontiac, Chief of the Ottawas, united a coalition of American Indian tribes to resist British rule in the Great Lakes region and Ohio Valley. Effect- it showed the ability of diverse tribes to come together and form an effective coalition to resist British forces
  • British Colonial Acts

    Cause- To protect British merchants from being paid colonial currency. Definition- The acts were passed to protect British merchants from being paid in depreciated colonial currency Effect- Many colonists have revolted against these acts
  • Boston Massacre

    Cause- Britain sent soldiers from the British army to Boston to protect the officials and try to calm things down for the colonists rebelling to the Townshed Acts which then ended up with 5 people dead Definition- When British soldiers in Boston opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men Effect- It further incensed colonists already weary of British rule and unfair taxation and roused them to fight for independence
  • British Tea Party

    Cause- The American colonists believed Britain was unfairly taxing them to pay for expenses incurred during the French and Indian War. Definition- a raid on three British ships in Boston Harbor colonists, disguised as Indians, threw the contents of several hundred chests of tea into the harbor as a protest against British taxes on tea and against the monopoly granted the East India Company. Effect- The British passed the Intolerable acts, which were very harsh and cruel to the people of Boston
  • First Continental Congress

    Cause- The king was mad about the Boston Tea Party and wanted to punish the colonists Definition- comprised of delegates from the colonies, met in 1774 in reaction to the Coercive Acts, a series of measures imposed by the British government on the colonies in response to their resistance to new taxes Effect- In 1774 the First Continental Congress met in summary: In response to Britain's taxes and treatment of the colonists, leaders of the colonies met to discuss what to do about Britain
