Road to Revolution

  • Treaty of Paris/End of War

At this point in time, the war has ended and the colonists are already getting ready and looking forward for the new land. Some reason they are looking forward for this new land is because it is fertile as it is by the Ohio River Valley making it good to produce agricultural goods. Another reason is because they fought long and hard for this land.
  • Period: to

    Pontiac's rebellion

The Native Americans were mad at the British because of all of the suffering, and a Native American leader, Pontiac, leads a rebellion for 3 years. The Native Americans attack British frontier forts and would trick people to gain access to the forts in order to capture/kill the inhabitants.
  • Proclamation of 1763

The British government created the Proclamation line in order to keep the colonists from going into the new land. This affects economic opportunity, by mainly keeping the fertile land from being used.
  • Sugar Act

The Sugar Act was created in order to tax people using sugar, wine and coffee, with sugar being the main tax product. The Sugar Act was similar to another one called the Molasses Tax, and had half the payment, yet the colonists refused to pay it. The act passed to prevent smuggling, and to benefit primarily England at the expense of the American Colonies. The colonists were unhappy and refused to pay, and furthermore organized boycotts. This being the very least of what was done.
  • Stamp Act

The stamp act was the first direct tax to be imposed in the colonies' and required all public documents such as newspapers and legal documents, among many, to have a stamp tax. This tax didn't cause much of an impact on anyone but the rich and educated. Many of the colonists' reaction was to burn tax collectors in effigy and tarred and feathered them. The tax collectors being "mocked" as dummies.
  • Quartering Act

The Quartering Act required the colonists to provide shelter, food, a place to sleep, beer, cider and rum in an outhouse for the soldiers that came to the colonies' towns. The colonists did not like the idea of the soldiers "invading their privacy" to some extent and they thought this was an attempt to limit their freedom. The colonists' wanted the soldiers to go away because for them this was "a time of peace, not war".
  • Virginia Resolves

The Virginia Resolves was basically the Virginia House of Burgesses passing the Virginia Resolves. A document in which denied the parliament's right to tax people using the stamp act.
  • Period: to

    Stamp Act Congress

The colonies' congress sent a letter to the British government petitioning tax. They had various meeting to UNITE the colonies, where multiple protests, refusal to pay taxes and even attacks on tax collectors were inspired.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

The pressure caused by the colonies toward England, caused the economy of the colonies to go down because of the boycott of British goods and produce. The Parliament then repealed (annulled) the Stamp Act in March of 1766. At this point the damage between the colonies and the English relationship had been done.
  • Declaratory Act

The Declaratory Act was a law passed by the British Government claiming rights to tax colonies. This act was created in order to "substitute" the Stamp Act.
  • Period: to

    Townshend Act

The Townshend Act was a series of four acts passed by the British Parliament because they thought that the colonists had to obey their orders. They also made the acts to try to show authority over the colonies and impose taxes over them, mainly on lead, glass, paper, paint and tea. This followed with multiple boycotts, primarily by the Daughters of Liberty using "homespun" fabric to make clothes. These followings caused Britain to send in more soldiers in order to stop the boycotts.
  • Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre has been told as starting when a soldier was walking to his soldier colleagues a group of colonists was following him and they were throwing snowballs, ice and rocks. The soldier got to his colleagues and the colonists continued throwing. One soldier shouted "Fire", and the small group of soldiers shot at the colonists. They killed 3 colonists on the spot and later 2 colonists died.
