  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri wanted to join the Union so that it was a slave state. This made congress upset because the congressional balance was uneven which meant the south would have more power. Henry Clay a senator then broke the compromise. They magically make a line at latitude 36.
  • Mexican Cession

    The land won in the Mexican war was added to the southern land. With this northerners feared this land would give south majority in congress. David Wilmont, a congressman called a law which would ban slavery in any lands won from the Mexico.
  • Compromise of 1850

    California wants to join as a free state which is a problem because it is going to upset the congressional balance. South is not happy and does not want to be part of U.S anymore.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    This was part of the Compromise of 1850. The south wanted any escaped slaves returned to them. If northerners did not want to return slaves so they would either be fined $1000 or spend 6 months in jail. Northerners had to go to court and the judge had to either send them to south or let them be free. Later, slave begins to head to Canada.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book talked about slavery like how people were treated like animal and are persecuted. This book was heartbreaking to many people which increases the abolitionist movement dramatically.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This is about a senator named Stephen Douglass. He introduce a bill to set up a government for the Nebraska Territory. He did not like slavery. Because southerners di not support another free state, Stephen he had two ideas, he could split the territory into 2 states and allow popular sovereignty to decide.
  • The Republican Party

    The main goal was to keep slavery out of territories. Republicans choose John C. Freemont but they end up losing but they have a strong showing. The democrats choose James Buchanan and they won.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott
    Dred Scott was a slave who live in Missouri and then move to Illinois and Wisconsin Territory which then he move to Missouri again. Scott thought that he should be free but he couldn’t because he was not a citizen.

    During the election, southerners felt that they no longer had a say in government. South Carolina secede and several southerners states follow. They then later decide to change the name Confederate States of America and Jefferson Davis becomes president. Lincoln takes office and wants to preserve the union as one of his goal.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    This was a federal fort in Charleston Harbor. The Confederates see this fort as an enemy asks them to surrender but Major Anderson refuses to give up and open a fire. Lincoln then decides that the only way we can get our land back is to have a war.
