    Sandford B.Dole

    U.S navel port (Pearl Harbor). Pres. Grover Cleveland denied annexation. Then later passed by congress to annex Hawaii (1898). Over throw of Queen Liliuokalani by Sanford. Dole became president of Hawaii. Annexation of Hawaii because of Spanish American war. Dole becomes governor of Hawaii (1900-1903). One of Doles cousins developed the ''Dole'' pineapple Company.
  • USS Maine

    The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American citizens while Cuba revolutionaries were fighting to win independence from Spain. Publishers Pulitzer and newspaper deliberately sensationalized the news, depicting the Spaniards as murderous and brutes in order to sell newspaper, having Medias reaction outraged Americans and embarrasses Spain This technique became known as Yellow Journalism.

The treaty of Paris was signed, U.S gain the Philippines, Guam, and all Spain's colonies and Puerto Rico with exception Cuba. Do to U.S win they became known as World Power.

    Theodore Roosevelt

    Became Governor of N.Y. with the Republican Party. In 1901, Teddy became William McKinley' VP. When McKinley was assassinated, Roosevelt became Pres. He became the youngest man to become Pres., he also won a 2nd term in 1904. Teddy's foreign policy was to ''speak softly and carry a big stick''. On the other hand, however, he also feared giving too much power to labor unions & big businesses. His Square Deal policies attempted to strike a balance between labor unions & businesses.

    Panama Canal

    American and businessmen wanted to ship goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. It was built to shorten the ocean journey from the East coast to the West. The construction of its 51-mile length took 10 years (1902-1014) at cost of thousands of lives and 400 million. Panama was part pf Columbia, the U.S and Columbia would negotiate but wouldn't agree to terms. Panama wished to obtain their independence. U.S counted them as their own country.

    The Roosevelt corollary changed Monroe Doctrine. In effect, the corollary said that the U.S would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America. During the next decade, the U.S excised its police power on several occasions. For example, when a rebellion in Nicaragua left the nation near bankruptcy, President William H.Taft arranged for American bankers to loan Nicaragua enough money. To pay its debts and set in the marches to collect payments.
