Texans executed at Fort Goliad chapel

Sam Houston elected president of the Republic of Texas
After Texas gained its independence from Mexico, Sam Houston was elected president of the Republic of Texas. -
Lamar became President
Sam Houston was unable to be president for a consecutive second term. Lamar, who opposed Sam Houston's ideas, was elected president on December 10, 1838. He was aggressive towards the Indians instead of wanting peace with them. He was also against Texas being annexed into the United States. Annexation Rejected
The United States Senate rejected for Texas to be annexed into the U.S. in June 1844. -
