On March 19, 1840, sixty-five Penateka Comanche Indians, including tribe leaders, entered San Antonio. The Texan leaders were informed that there were Texans being held hostage by the Comanche, and as an attempt to have their people released, tried to hold the Comanche that had arrived hostage as well. This initiated a fight which concluded with the death of the majority of the Comanche people who were there and caused a deep and lasting hatred to form in the Comanche for the Texans.

In March of 1845, the Tyler administration secured the annexation of Texas through a Joint Resolution of Congress.

The new Texas constitution secured voter approval in October elections and was accepted by the US Congress in December 1845.
