  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act, also known as the American Revenue Act or American Duties Act, was a Revenue raising act and was an indirect tax. It arrived in the Colonies at a time of economic depression and soon after protests began to have it removed. It was enacted to help the Britsh Government pay off dept brought on by the Seven Years' War. However, soon after repealed by the Revenue act of 1766.
  • The Quartiering Act

    The Quartering Act required colonial legislatures to pay for certain supplies for British troops stationed in each colony. The Quartering Act became controversial during 1766, when New York refuses to comply with it.The Act was one of the series of Intolerable Acts passed as a reprisal to the Boston Tea Party. The history of the Quartering Acts is directly linked to the causes of the American Revolution.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed. The money collected by the Stamp Act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains.
  • The Townshend Duties (The Revenue Act)

    The Townshend duties was the popular name for the collected import taxes imposed by the Revenue Act of 1767. The Revenue Act taxed glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea entering the colonies. The duties were clearly passed in an effort to raise revenue for the British treasury rather than to regulate trade. The Townshend Acts were met with resistance in the colonies, prompting the occupation of Boston by British troops
  • The Revenue Act of 1862

    This act increased taxes and implemented the first federal income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1862 was passed by Congress in order to fund the American Civil War, and in the process also created the Bureau of Internal Revenue that managed tax collection duties. The income tax was the best source of income during that period, increasing government coffers by an estimated $340 million during the 10 year period it existed.
