The selling of indulgences was a big part of the Church when it came to collecting money. The story behind them was that a person could buy one for a loved one, or themselves. If you bought one, whoever you bought it for had a certain amount of time taken from purgatory. The more money you spent for one, the more time you would have taken off. -
