During the Papal Schism, the king tried putting a tax on the French clergy. The Pope then threatened the excommunication of the king, in result, the pope would be arrested. He was later released. Many people felt that the French kings controlled the church.

Pope Gregory of the Catholic church moved the papacy back to live in Rome, after previously living in Avignon. After Gregory's death, the French cardinals were not fond of the new pope in Rome, being so they elected a different pope in Avignon.
