Known as Hospital of the innocents, Filippo Brunelleschi is back at it again building a magnificent building. Started in 1419 and was finished in 1427. Was originally built as a charity institution for orphaned children. Regarded as a notable example of early Italian Renaissance architecture. -

Johanneses Printing Press has Come!
But it all began in France, that is where he started experimenting with printing. He was already experienced in bookmaking and that, most likely, helped him. Gutenberg perfected the small metal type, more practical than carving wooden blocks for every letter. Gutenberg's innovation helped so many people and without his invention we wouldn't have magazines, books and textbooks! His invention was monumental!!! -

Ruler of Florence from 1469 to 1478, Lorenzo de Medici was considered very wise for his time. As well as a ruler, Lorenzo was a patron for arts and letters. In addition, his patronage of the arts was renowned and those under his protection surprisingly included Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. -

Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise
Finished in 1452, Lorenzo's masterpiece shows scenes of Adam and Eve, Jacob and Esau, and the blessing of their father, David and Goliath. Even Michelangelo said "Truly worthy to be the gates of paradise." So it's a pretty big deal. -

The Santa Maria Fiore Cathedral Deserves an Applause!
Filippo Brunelleschi built the Santa Maria Fiore cathedral in Florence, Italy. He is considered a major or seminal figure of the renaissance. Brunelleschi had used over 4 million bricks just to build the dome alone!! He invented a new lifting machine for raising bricks for the dome. The whole cathedral was finished in 1461. -

Ginevra de Benci was painted by Leonardo da Vinci. A beautiful picture of a woman with porcelain skin and impeccable hair, 16 year old Ginevra de' Benci was very beautiful for her time. No one really knows why Leonardo painted her but she sure is a beauty. Painted 1474-1478. -

Raphael has Arrived!
Raphael,Born on April 6th 1483 in Urbino Italy, grew up to be a famous painter. Known for painting the Madonnas, no not the singer, in Rome from 1509 to 1511. In 1514 Pope Julius II actually hired Raphael as chief architect. Close to that same time, Raphael completed his last Madonna called "Sistine Madonna" as an oil painting. Ironically the day he died was April 6th 1520, what a coincidence! -

Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel
Michelangelo started painting the beautiful painting we all know on the Sistine Chapel ceiling in 1508 to 1512. One of the biggest lies about this is that everyone says he painted it laying down, but no he painted it standing up! Erasmus born in 1446, was an early humanist. Erasmus was a very well known scholar and lecturer. A very influential publication of Erasmus is The Praise Of Folly which he wrote himself. Another influential publication of his is the translation of the New Testamate in Greek in 1516. Even though he was a big supporter of Protestism, he was against the radicalism. -

The Reformation is Upon us!
1517, the usual date of the start of the Reformation. What is the reformation you might ask? It is a time period in the Renaissance where more people began to read the bible because it was finally printed in German! At this time many people split from the Catholic Church because of Martin Luther's points in his 95 Theses. They started a new religion called Protestantism. Which sadly caused some wars. But the protestants started a new church to practice their new religion. -

The Mona Lisa, famous oil painting created by Leonardo da Vinci, was painted some time between 1508 and 1519. This painting now hangs in the Louvre in Paris, France. The main mystery about this painting is why she's smiling, many conspiracies have been floating around the internet but we have yet to find out the real reason behind it. -

Martin Luther Stop Nailing the 95 Theses on my Church Door!
Martin Luther, most famous for his 95 Theses, was born in 1483. Luther objected the idea of the church selling indulgences, which are things you could buy that would excuse your sins and let you go to heaven, This lead him to write the 95 Theses. On October 31st, 1517 Luther traveled to the church and hammered his 95 theses to the door. This lead to the church to stop selling indulgences because no one bought them because of reading Martins Luther's 95 Theses. He sadly passed away in 1546. -

Please Give a Fanfare for King Henry the VIII
King Henry the VII was born in 1491 at the Palace of Palentia in Greenwich, England. (hmm Greenwich sounds familiar) in 1501 he was Prince of Whales after the death of his brother. In 1509 He became king and married Katherine of Aragon, who was divorced along with his one of his other 5 wives who had a worse fate then Katherine, being beheaded! King Henry died in 1547. -

Diana and Actaeon is a painting by the Italian, Titian, worked on in 1556 through completion in 1559, and is considered amongst Titian's greatest works. It shows the moment in which the goddess, Diana meets Actaeon. Diana is the woman on the right side of the painting.
