    On August, 3, 1492 Columbus left Palos, Spain to try to find an alternate route to Asia. Columbus had established a small colony in Hispaniola which he believed to be Japan. He returned to Spain in March 1493 with gold, spices, and captives. He was then given the title of "admiral of the ocean sea".
