The Council of Chalcedon
The Council of Chalcedon met in 451 AD. Combined they made on of the most important rulings the church has seen to date. They agreed there were two natures of christ. These being divine and human, but they also existed as one being. -

East-West Schism
Due to many differences between both sides of the church, in particular issues on who should lead the church. The west and the east had a time of excommunication between each other. And over the years these two sides have continued to split apart till where it is at now. -

The Black Death
Due to the black death being such a widespread disease killing a large amount of the population, people began questioning god's motives and why he would want to do such a thing. People also wondered why the leaders of the church couldn't please him enough to stop the plague. Once the plague was over catholic's still questioned why he would do such a thing. -

Martin Luther's Publication of 95 theses
Martin Luther was one of the first people to stand up for what the church was doing with the abuse of "indulgences." On the 31st of October 1517 Martin made the 95 theses which consisted of 95 statements about the church life and in particular the indulgences. Throughout the following years luther and the church continued to fight over the document, till it got to a point in 1524 where he got banished from the church. -

The Council Of Trent
After Martin Luther's stand against the church's practices it was clear to Paul 3 III who first summoned the Council of Trent, who met multiple times from 1545 to 1563. The Council did many things, some of these included; the getting rid of any corrupt practices used by priests and members within the church, this included the use of indulgences to make money. -

The peace of Augsburg was a treaty between two forces, it ended the struggle between both groups and made christianity legal among the roman empire. -

The First Vatican Council
The first Vatican council was held between 1869 and 1870 and was formed by Blessed Pius IX and was home to 744 Bishops. Its main goal was to review the entirety of the catholic faith as well as dealing with the issue of how much authority the pope should have. They were the ones that came up with the rule that the pope is the successor of saint peter and he is infallible. -

The Second Vatican Council
The Second Vatican Council was the 21st Ecumenical Council of the catholic church. It is known as the time where the church became open to the modern world. It met every 3 months for the 4 years after that. They had over 2600 Bishops that attended from all over the world. They also had approximately another 400 non bishops who attended. It was also the first council to use any form of modern technology.
