My very first memories of literature were my mom reading Goodnight Moon to me. This was my favorite book, and we would read it before I went to bed almost every night.

When I was in kindergarten we had 5th grade reading buddies who would come into our class about once a week to read with us. I remember always being so excited for this day of the week to see which book my buddy had chose to read to me.

All throughout elementary school, we would celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with a pajama day. In 2nd grade we got to spend all day reading in our PJs and lounging around the classroom.

In third grade we my entire class got to write their own stories which we then sent into a company to get them bound so they were like a real published book. When we all got our books back we spent a whole afternoon reading our classmates' stories.

When I was in 9th grade I took Honors English. We read a lot of classic literature in this class like The Odyseey, Romeo and Juliet, and Of Mice and Men. While the reading load was quite heavy, this was the first opportunity I got to really analyze literature, and I actually ended up really enjoying the class even though previously I hated English classes.

Taking APUSH in 11th grade gave me the skills I needed to analyze and interpret informational text. These readings also sparked a love for history in me which has inspired me to become a teacher.

During my senior year of high school I took an elementary education class. One of our first assignments for this class was to learn how to read and present books to young children and knowing how to incorporate them into the story by asking questions and having them make predictions etc.

I have learned a great deal about how to read to very young children from working at an Early Head Start. It is so amazing to see how much some of them genuinely enjoy reading and how it can really captivate their attention.
