By July 1584, they are off the coast of now North Carolina.
They claim the land 600 miles in either direction for England. The area they land in is called Roanoke Island. -
The expedition meets the Natives on the 2nd day
Following a friendly encounter, the expedition takes 2 natives, Manteo and Wanchese, back to England after a 6 week stay at Roanoke Island -
The expedition returns to England with glowing reports of the new area, now called Virginia.
Raleigh urges the Queen to colonize the area
In 1585, Raleigh sends 100 men to colonize the area. -
7 ships of all men set sail for Roanoke.
Ralph Lane is the commander of the colony
Families would arrive 10 months later.
Manteo and Wanchese also return with the colony
Arrive on June 26, 1585 -
English explorer Sir Francis Drake drops in on the colony.
Finds them in desperate shape.
Agrees to take them all back to England.
