After Puerto Rico was conquested by the United States , it was introduced English in the publics schools. -
1900
Commissioner Brumbaugh, President Mckinley's Commisioner of Education, decided that English would be the language of instruction only in the secondary schools. -
1902
The Official Language Act granted official status to both English and Spanish. -

It was an increase in the usage of English in the schools with the goal of converting it in the official language of schools in Puerto Rico. -

The official status of English and Spanish was revoked, when Theodore Roosevelt's Commissioner of Education re-established English as the medium of instructions in all grades. -
1905-1913
Thru this years Spanish was suppressed. English is used like a learning tool in all grades at the Educational System. -

It was introduced the English language for some courses like health and they also recommended that the students should read in Spanish. -

It was presented a project to make compulsory Spanish as a learning tool. -

Spanish was reinstated as the medium of instruction for the first four grades. -
1921-1930
Juan B. Huyke as Commissioner of Education put more emphasis to the use of English. Materials were publish in English. -
1930
Commisioner of Education, Jose Padin, introduced a language policy which required all subjects except English to be taught in Spanish in the first grades. -
1934
The language policy shifted toward assimilation when Blanton S. Winthrop, made English the language of instruction in all grades. -
1941
English was re-established as the language of instruction in the secondary schools. -
1948
Luis Munoz Rivera, first elected Governor of Puerto Rico, established Spanish as the language of instruction in all grades. English was to be taught for one period a day as a second language. -
1991
Another language policy was the "Spanish only" legislation approved y the Popular party. -
1993
Their was a law substition for Law number 1, a Pro Statehood Party language policy which established both English and Spanish as official languages on the island. -
1997
n 1997, while the statehood party was in power, English immersion programs also made their way into Puerto Rican schools, under the “Project to Create a Bilingual Citizen.” -
1997-1998
Dr. Pedro Rosello established an official act where English and Spanish will be considered the official language of Puerto Rico. -
2012
Luis Fortuno implanted a program where all public schools should become bilingual schools by 2022.
