  • Boston Latin School

    Boston Latin School
    The Boston Latin School is the oldest and first ever public school in America. This school was founded to teach religion, latin and classic literature. Some of attendees include John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Benjamin Franklin.
  • Free Public Education

    Free Public Education
    In 1804 Pennsylvania demanded that the poor would get an education. Those who were wealthy would have to pay for it. The education of the poor would be paid by tax-payers.
  • New York Public School

    In 1806 the New York public school society is opened. It is founded by wealthy businessman. The school is ran by one "master" teaching a lot of students at the same time. The older pass down their information to the young. This is called Lancastrian model.

    In 1821 Boston English was founded one of the first ever public high schools in America. At that time this high school only admitted boys.
  • 1865-1875

    During this period of time African Americans were fight to bring public education to the south. After the civil war Africa Americans were pushing for political changes.
  • Plessy V Ferguson

    Plessy V Ferguson
    This was a decision of the US Supreme Court. It allowed public facilities to racially segregated. This was known as "separate but equal". This is also know as one of the worst decisions in the supreme court history.
  • Smith Hughes Act

    The Smith Hughes Act passes which creates funding for vocational education.
  • Brown v Board

    Brown v Board
    The court declared that it was unconstitutional for black and white students to be separate in public schools. The south was very angry as a result of this since schools have been segregated since 1896.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    Title IX protects people from discrimination of any sex education programs and federal financial assistances. This prevented gender discrimination. This act was passed by president Nixon.

    Education of all Handicapped Children Act
    This act was made to provide education and one free meal to students with physical and mental disabilities. Public schools had to evaluate the children and go over an educational plan with the parents.

    The supreme court guarantees all children no matter their immigration status come from access to basic public education.
