First Kentucky Derby
The first Kentucky derby takes place. A total of 15 horses ran the 1.5 miles in front of 10,000 fans. Aristides was the name of the winning horse. -
Hatfield's go on Trial
Members of the Hatfield family were tried and convicted at the Pike County Courthouse in Kentucky for a raid on Randall McCoy's home. His daughter and son were killed, his wife was beaten unconscious and his home burned to the grown. The feud between these 2 families claimed the lives of a dozen members of the two families. -

Capitol Building
The present state capitol building opens. The official cost for the building was $1,820,000. Kentucky used the over 1 million dollars from the federal government from damages sustained during the Civil War and for services provided during the Spanish American Way. -
First Woman in Office
Emma Guy Cromwell becomes the first woman to hold a statewide office when she ran as a Democrat for Kentucky Secretary of State and won. This made her the first woman in Kentucky to hold a statewide office. -
Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave was officially dedicated as a national park in 1941. Mammoth Cave National park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River valley and hilly country of south-central Kentucky. It is the world's largest known cave system, with more than 400 miles explored. -

Lake Cumberland
Lake Cumberland is filled with water and was created primarily for flood control and the production of hydroelectric power. It cost 80.4 million dollars. It's shoreline measures 1,255 miles compared to the coastline of Florida which measures 770 miles in length (not including islands). The town of Burnside, Kentucky was moved to a higher elevation as the water being filled went on top of the town. Many of the features of the town are still at the bottom of the lake. -

Civil Rights Act
The Kentucky Civil Rights Act was signed by Governor Edward T. Breathitt. It was the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line to pass its own state-level civil rights act. The law protected people from discrimination based on race, color, and religion in areas of employment and public accommodations. Since then several amendments have been made. -

For the first time, the World Equestrian Games took place outside of Europe. It was held at the Kentucky Horsepark in Fayette County. There were 632 athletes, 752 horses, 58 countries represented and a total of 507,022 spectators in attendance. -
