The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine made four basic points. To start, the United States would not interfere in the internal affairs of or the wars between European powers. The United States also recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies in the Western Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization; and last but not least any attempt by a European power to oppress or control any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States. -

The meat inspection act was caused by the novel "the jungle" written by Upton Sinclair who exposed the reched conditions of the meat packing industry. -

The Gentleman's Agreement
This was an informal agreament bewteen the United States and Japan. The US had agreed to not impose restrictions on Japanese immigration, however Japan would not allow further emigration to the United States. -
17th Amendment Passed
The Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution established the popular election of United States senators by the people of the states.
