This was a lawsuit started by Homer Plessy when he boarded a rail car designated for use by whites only. -
Meat Inspection Act
This act came after muckraker Upton Sinclair published his book, “The Jungle.” This act required meat to be inspected before sold. -
NAACP Formed
This stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This soon became one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the country. -
16th Amendment
This amendment created an income tax. The reform was aimed at curbing the power of the rich. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
Women were burned to death and jumping out of a 10 story building to escape a fire. This resulted in rules for work buildings. -
Election of 1912
Roosevelt decided to run for president again, but couldn’t run as a republic because Taft was still running. He created a political party called “Bull Moose,” or Progressive Party. Because of the split votes, Woodrow Wilson, a democrat, won the election. -
17th Amendment
This amendment allowed direct election of senators which gave more power to the voters. -
18th Amendment
The 18th Amendment is also known as the Volstead Act and banned all alcohol. -
19th Amendment
This amendment gave women the right to vote. This took action after Susan B. Anthony fought for women's suffrage.
