Tuskegee Institute Opens
This place was used to train teachers. It taught regular academics but also taught some other skills that could be used for future jobs. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
This was a court case in which the US Supreme Court decided that there would still be racial divisions but they all had to be equal in quality. This was know a the "separate but equal" doctrine. -
Meat Inspection Act
This made it illegal to sell things as meat that weren't actually meat and it makes sure that the slaughtering and processing is done in sanitary conditions. -
NAACP Formed
This is a civil rights organization used to get more justice for African American people. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
At the top of the factory, a fire broke out. The owners locked the workers inside with no way to escape the fire other than the windows. Many jumped out window in order to die quicker and with less pain. This event killed 146 people. -
Election of 1912
This was the 32nd election for presidents in office for four years. Wilson won this election. -
16th Amendment
This gave the US government the right to collect an income tax. It was passed by Congress on July 2, 1909 and ratified on February 3, 1913. -
17th Amendment
States that the US Senate will be composed of two senators from each state and that they are elected by the people of that state. They would stay in their position for six years. It was passed by Congress on May 13, 1912 and ratified on April 8, 1913. -
18th Amendment
This basically banned alcohol. It was ratified on January 16, 1919. -
19th Amendment
This gave women the right to vote. It was passed on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920.
