America decided to make a law prohibiting Chinese citizens coming into the U.S. -

A law saying the railroads need to be fair and give realistic prices, this was also an attempt to regulate the level of monopoly in the railroad company. -

A hull-house was was a house opened to working class people(mostly immigrants) which provides them social and educational opportunities. -

Sherman Antitrust Act
A law passed that made cartels, monopolies, and trusts illegal. There was no competition in the industry so the monopolies had control over all the prices. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
The U.S Supreme Court ruled that "separate but equal" was allowed and had Constitutional merit. -
McKinley Assassinated
McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz and he died 8 days later. -
Coal Miner Strike of 1902
The miners wouldn't work, so Teddy went to go talk to them, and sided with them instead of big business. This got new working laws passed. -
Ida Tarbell- "The History of Standard Oil"
Ida Tarbell was a journalist who wrote a book about Rockefeller's Standard Oil company, exposing how he his company was a monopoly, and used unfair practices to stay on top. -
Teddy Roosevelt's- Square Deal
Roosevelt's campaign plan and laws he put in place during his term. They protected consumers, controlled corporations,and conservation of natural resources. -
The Jungle
Written by Upton Sinclair, The Jungle is about how the meat-packing industry really works,and what happens behind the scenes. The filth and contamination that was rampant in the industry was unknown to those eating,and buying the meats. -
Federal Meat Inspection Act
An act passed in the U.S making it illegal to mislead consumers about whats in the meat they're buying. Also it ensured that the conditions meat is slaughtered and packaged in is sanitary and safe to consume. -

An act used to protect land and resources, also to prevent destruction of Native American cultural structures. -
Food and Drug Act
An act passed to protect people buying food and drugs. The conditions of meat-packing industries, foods were repulsive and unsanitary, and no labels on food or drug packaging. -

Supreme court case, fighting for the laborer's rights. Limited a working woman's hours to 10 a day. -
Taft Wins
Roosevelt didn't run again this term, but he pushed for William Taft to run under the assumption he would do what Roosevelt wanted him to do. Their understanding prior to Taft's election was that he would follow in Roosevelt's footsteps. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
A fire in New York burned and it killed 145 people. This fire raised awareness for working conditions, which gave rise to new laws on worker protection. -
Underwood- Simmons Tariff
This act re-established federal income tax and lowered tariff rates. -
Department of Labor Established
This a cabinet of the U.S which is responsible for job safety, working conditions, wages, unemployment benefits, hours and help getting reemployed. -
17th Amendment
voters to cast direct votes for U.S. Senators, instead of being chosen by state legislatures. -
Federal Reserve act
President Wilson gave 12 Federal Reserve banks the right to print money for economic stability. -
16th Amendment
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." -
Federal Trade Commission
The Federal Trade Commission protects the rights of the consumer and is in charge of enforcing anti-trust laws. -

This act established the Federal Trade Commission and outlaws unfair methods of competition and unfair acts or practices that affect commerce -
Wilson Elected
Democratic Presidential Candidate Woodrow Wilson won the election of 1916. He won over Supreme Court Justice Charles Evan Hughes and his motto was "New Freedom"
