  • Sales taxes in the wealthy

    In the year 1894 the federal government used income tax on all forms of income for the wealthy. This was not done proportionally across states and was considered a direct tax, therefore it was illegal based on Article 1, Section 2 of the constitution. It was removed the following year by the supreme court.
  • Federal reserve act

    Helped to manage the nations economy indirectly through a private bank that was run by officials elected by the president. They controlled interest and the amount of money in circulation. In return this promoted trust in banks for the first time since the 1830s (the last reserve).
  • 13th amendment

    The 13th amendment allowed taxes on income of all types. This was previously illegal due to the constitution. This helped economic reform by keeping the brunt of taxes off the working class.

    Promotes economic reform by keeping big businesses from practicing unfair trade. This kept businesses from cheating or becoming monopolies.
