  • Coal Strike of 1902

    Workers strike for 3 days about higher wages & shorter hours. This event falls under creating economic reform because they saw an unbalance of wealth among big business, government, and ordinary people.
  • Created Department of Commerce and Labor

    President Theodore Roosevelt established the Department of Commerce and Labor to investigate business practices, assure fair trade, address labor issues, and aid commerce. This falls under creating economic reform because it shows that the government did not give businesses favorable treatment. It creates a fairness between workers and businesses.
  • Food and Drug Administration

    President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law the Food and Drug Act. The Act prohibited the interstate transport of food which had been "adulterated," with that term referring to the addition of fillers of reduced "quality or strength," coloring to conceal "damage or inferiority," formulation with additives "injurious to health," or the use of "filthy, decomposed, or putrid" substances. This falls under protecting social welfare because it is protecting citizens from diseases in food.

    The 16th amendment is an important amendment that allows the federal government to collect an income tax from all Americans. Other taxes, such as taxes on houses or other property are considered direct taxes by the Constitution and would have to be divided back among the states. This falls under creating economic reform because it makes sure that ALL Americans are required to give an income tax, not just the poor.

  • Keating-Owens Child Labor Act

    The act banned the sale of products from any factory, shop, or cannery that employed children under the age of 14, from any mine that employed children under the age of 16, and from any facility that had children under the age of 16 work at night or for more than 8 hours during the day. This falls under protecting social welfare because it prohibits child labor.

    The National Park System of the United States is the collection of physical properties owned or administered by the National Park Service. The collection includes all national parks and most national monuments, as well as several other types of protected areas of the United States. This falls under promoting moral improvement because it protects the important aspects of our country.
