"How the Other Half Lives" by Jacob Riis
This publication led to a refrom in standard of living due to the reaction of the public. It led to better sanitary conditions, the tearing down of sweatshops and other bad housing. THis novel truly showed the upper and middle class the coditions poor people lived in at that time. -

Sherman Antitrust Act
This Act was pased during the Presidency of Benjamin Harrison, to stop anti-competition actions which hurt the economy, such as monopolies and cartels. These actions meant that a specific business controlled the price of goods and therefore the dentriment to the people. -
The Niagra Movement
Led by W.E.B. Du Bois, this group worked for civil rights of minorities. It was named the Niagra movemnet because of the lagre influence of current they wanted to have on society. After years of work the Niagra Movement accomplished few local victories on civil rights but nothing on the national level. THis group was the catalyst to the NAACP. -
Roosevelt's Square Deal
The Square Deal was President Theodore Roosevelt's domestic plan formed upon three basic ideas: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection. This plan was a key factor in his victory in the 1906 eletions. -
"The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair
This novel by Upton Sinclair show the work day and the practices of the meat packing business. In the novel it is depicted how unsanitary and dishonest the companies were to their customers. The publics reaction was instant. within just a few months of the publication of "The Jungle" there were already new food and drug regulation being put in place. -
Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act
The fist of a series of consumer protection laws. Largely influenced by Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle", these laws banned mislabeled and adulterated food products as well as unpure drugs. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire
This was an accident in a sweatshop which highlighted work conditions and safety which called them to the public's attention. This helped the augmentation of worker protection laws and regulations. -
Federal Reserve Act
This act established a Federal Reserve System which then required all nationally chartered banks to become a part of. it also established the Federal Reserve which then established the bank note as legal tender. -
Adamson Act
This established an eight-hour work day for railroad and interstate workers. It also established overtime pay for all time worked past the scheduled shift. -
Universal Women's Sufferage
Years of work by the NAWSA finally paid off and women gained national sufferage. This showed a large turn in social culture and a large step for women. -
Prohibition Amendment Ratified
This called for the outlaw of alcohol in America, this led to a large outbreak of crime. This amendment was the first and only Amendment to be overturned.
