  • Hull House is founded

    Hull House is founded
    Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded the Hull House in 1889 "to provide a center for a higher civic and social life; to institute and maintain educational and philanthropic enterprises, and to investigate and improve the conditions in the industrial districts of Chicago." (Hull House's founding charter). Each week Hull house was visited by around 2000 people.
  • Pullman strike

    Pullman strike
    After George Pullman, the owner of the Pullman sleeping-car factory in Chicago, had cut his workers wages they went on strike. Eugene V. Debs who was the president of the American Railway Union (ARU) supported them. "The struggle...has developed into a contest between the producing classes and the money power of the country. We stand upon the ground that the workingmen are entitled to a just proportion of the proceeds of their labor" (Debs) During the Pullman Strike the ARU got destroyed.

    The "Cross of Gold" Speech was hold by William Jennings Bryan. With this speech he was trying to become the canditate for the president elections, representing the Democratic Party. Because the "Cross of Gold" speech was so powerful and impressive he won the nomination. He didn't become president though.

    After President McKinley was shot by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz on September 6th and died on Sptember 14th, Theodore Roosevelt became the 26. President of the USA. He won the election with 336 out of 476 votes. With the age of 42 he was the youngest person to ever become president of the States.

    Woodrow Wilson was president of Princeton University from 1902- 1910 (Month and day not right). He had many ideas of how to improve education which he became wildly known for.
  • Upton Sinclair publishes "The Jungle"

    Upton Sinclair publishes "The Jungle"
    "The Jungle" is a novel about the meat -packing industry in Chicago. The author Upton Sinclair wanted to show people the unhealthful conditions in this industry by describing a lot of details, like therats and the water that drops on the meat because the roof is leaky. A lot of people were very upset and wanted the government to improve the conditions in food-processing industries.

    In 1910 (Month and day not right) Hiram Johnson, a member of the Republican Party was elected president of the State of California. While he was governor the legislature passed several progressive measures, for example "women's suffrage".
