Programming Languages Timeline

  • Plankalkul

Plankalkul, or Plan Calculus, was developed by Konrad Zuse. It was the first high-level programming language.
  • MATH-MATIC

MATH-MATIC was developed as an improvement to FORTRAN by Charles Katz in 1957.
  • FORTRAN

The Formula Translating System, FORTRAN, is a programming langauge designed to handle computations. Its development was lead by John W Backus.
  • LISP

LISP was devloped by John McCarthy as a Turin-complete algorithm language.
  • RPG

Report Program Generator was developed by IBM to process punched cards in IBM computers.
  • COBOL

Common Business Oriented Language, or COBOL, was developed by large DoD-headed group, including William Selden, Gertrude Tierney, Howard Bromberg, Howard Discount, Vernon Reeves, and Jean E Sammet. It was written for use in business computer systems.
  • BASIC

Begging All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, or BASIC, was written by John G Kemeny and Thomas E Kurtz in 1964. Its purpose is to allow those not studying math or science to use computer programming.
  • LOGO

LOGO was developed by Wally Feurzig, Daniel G Bobrow, and Seymour Papert as an educational software programming language. It was originally meant to teach the basics of LISP.
  • B

Written by Ken Thompson circa 1969, no more accurate date to be found. It was designed for use in non-numeric system programming.
  • PASCAL

PASCAL, named for French mathematician Blaise Pascal, was developed by Niklaus Wirth as a languange to increase efficiency in programming.
  • C

C was developed by Dennis Ritchie between 1969 and 1973, and published in 1972. It was designed to be used in system programming.
  • ML

Metalanguage, or ML, was developed by Robin Milner to prove computational theorems.
  • SQL

Structured Query Language was developed by Donald C Chamberlin and Raymond F Boyce to process and manage memory.
  • ADA

Designed by Jean Ichbiah and named after Ada Lovelace. It was designed as a standard language, which was rare at the time.
  • C++

C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup between 1979 and 1983. Its primary purpose is for system programming.
  • Python

Guido van Rossum developed Python, a scripting language mostly used in web applications.
  • Visual Basic

Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft as easy to use and understand programming software. Alan Cooper designed its drag-and-drop interface.
  • Delphi

Delphi, referencing a Greek myth, was developed by Anders Hejlsberg as a software development tool.
  • Java

Java was designed to let programmers write codes that could be used on any system. It was developed by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton.
  • PHP

Hypertext Preprocessor, or PHP, is a language developed for web design that was written by Rasmus Lerdorf.
  • Javascript

Javascript is a programming language designed for use in webpages. It was developed by Brendan Eich.
