Programming Languages

  • Plankalkul

Developed in 1948, the programming language Plankalkul was developed by Konrad Zuse. The main purpose of this language was to be used for engineering purposes.
  • Fortran

Developed in 1957, the programming language Fortran was developed by John Backus and IBM. The main purpose of this language was to work in programs that compute the benchmark for computers and computes numerical weather predictions and fluid dynamics.
  • MATH-MATIC

Developed in 1957, the programming language MATH-MATIC was developed by Remington Rand. The main purpose of this language was to provide algebraic style expressions and contain decimals and fractions.
  • Lisp

Developed in 1958, the programming language Lisp was developed by Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin. The main purpose of this language initially was to perform mathematical notations. Now it is used for artificial intelligence research.
  • COBOL

Developed in 1959, the programming language COBOL was developed by Howard Bromberg, Howard Discount, Vernon Reeves, Jean E. Sammet, William Selden, Gertrude Tierney. The main purpose of this language was to provide use in businesses, finance, and administrative purposes. This is a common business oriented language.
  • RPG

Developed in 1959, the programming language RPG was developed by IBM. The main purpose of this language was to be used for business applications. It was actually used as a Report Program Generator by IBM.
  • Basic

Developed in 1964, the programming language BASIC was developed by John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz. The main purpose of this language was to create a programming language that was easy to use. Around this time, only scientists and mathematicians could learn to create complex software. BASIC was created to give others that same opportunity. The acronym for this language means Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.
  • LOGO

Developed in 1967, the programming language LOGO was developed by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert, Cynthia Solomon. The main purpose of this language was to teach students about words and sentences as well as a feature called "turtle". Turtle is a small onscreen cursor that moves with your commands. As it moved, it drew a line. LOGO is not an acronym, it actually means "thought" when derived from the Greek language.
  • B

Developed in 1969, the programming language B was developed by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson. The main purpose of this language was to work on Multics.
  • PASCAL

Developed in 1970, the programming language PASCAL was developed by Niklaus Wirth. The main purpose of this language was to be a language that encourages efficient programming uses with structured programming and data structuring.
  • C

Developed in 1969-1973, the programming language C was developed by Dennis Ritchie. The main purpose of this language was to provide low-level access to memory and to encourage cross-platform programming.
  • ML

Developed in 1973, the programming language ML, or Meta Language, was developed by Robin Milner & others at the University of Edinburgh. The main purpose of this language was to provide automatic assignment of the types of most expressions without causing runtime type errors.
  • SQL

Developed in 1974, the programming language SQL, or Structured Query Language, was developed by ISO/IEC. The main purpose of this language was to be able to manage data that is kept in a relational database management system. It can access multiple records with one command in contrast to its predecessors.
  • C++

Developed in 1979, the programming language C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup. The main purpose of this language was to be an extension of C, an efficient and versatile language, but make it have the ability for high-level features in program organization.
  • ADA

Developed in 1980, the programming language ADA was developed by John Ichbiah. The main purpose of this language was to develop very large software systems.
  • Delphi

Developed in 1985, the programming language Delphi was developed by Borland and Embarcadero Technologies. The main purpose of this language was to be a rapid applications development tool for the Windows operating system. It is also a compiler for Object Pascal.
  • Python

Developed in 1991, the programming language Python was developed by Python Software Foundation. The main purpose of this language was to be used for general-purpose programming. The up-side of using Python is the fact that it is written with fewer lines of code. This makes it easier to read and interpret.
  • Java

Developed in 1995, the programming language Java was developed by James Gosling and Oracle. The main purpose of this language was to let developers compile Java code once and run multi-platform without a need to recompile.
  • JavaScript

Developed in 1995, the programming language JavaScript was developed by Brendan Eich, Netscape Communications Corporation, Mozilla Foundation, Ecma International. The main purpose of this language was to make websites interactive and give the ability of "online" in certain programs.
  • PHP

Developed in 1995, the programming language PHP was developed by Zend Technologies. The main purpose of this language was to be a server-sided scripting language for web development.
  • Visual Basic

Developed in 1998, the programming language Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft. The main purpose of this language was to have an easy teachability. Similar to BASIC in many ways, users can create applications using Visual Basic itself. Not much code is needed to create both simple and complex apps.
