    Proclamation of 1763
    In 1763, the proclamation of 1763 did not allow western expansion past the Appalachian mountains. The Britain’s did this because the needed to collect taxes from the colonists to pay off their debt from the war they served in for seven years. Also the British wanted to keep the Americans close to colonial authority so they could keep an eye on them.

    The British formed West and East Florida out of the land they took from France and Spain after the French and Indian War. Their new territory was too large to govern so the British decided to divide it into two new colonies separated by the Apalachicola River.

    Louisiana Purchase was in 1803. The American’s agreed to purchase the Louisiana territory for 15 million dollars. When the Americans purchased Louisiana they doubled the size of the United States but then again no one knew the exact size of the territory.

    In 1837 there was an idea of annexation. The idea was in the south was ideal but not in the north. Texas would symbolize another slave state. The problem of the annexation followed through the 1844 election and a treaty to annex Texas was submitted to senate.

    Webster- Ashburton was a treaty resolving trying to figure out problems over location of the Maine border in 1842. It also was established with another border between Lake Superior and Lake of the Woods.

    In 1846 the Oregon Territory stretched from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains. This territory created huge problems between Europe and the United States. When the conflicts ended it created treaties like the Treaty of 1818 that set up a joint occupation.

    In 1848 the Mexican Cession was referred to the land surrendered by Mexico after the Mexican War. The land was most of the Southwest Region of the United States from California to New Mexico.

    was known as Venta de La Mesilla. it was in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico that was purchased by the U.S in a treaty that was signed by James Gadsden on December 30, 1853.

    In 1866 the Russian government offered to sell the territory of Alaska to the United States. Both countries debated on how much they wanted to spend/sell Alaska for. On March 30, 1867, the two parties agreed that the United States would pay Russia $7.2 million for the territory of Alaska.

    The United States annexed Hawaii in 1898. Hawaii became territory in 1900 and Dole was the first to become governor. The annexation of Hawaii extended the United States territory into the pacific.
