    Lyndon B. Johnson took over president whenever John Kennedy was shot two times in a parade in Dallas, Texas. He was shot by Harvey Oswald who was in a nearby building. Johnson took the presidential oath on the air force 1 plane. Johnson is the only president that took oath in a plane.
  • Wilderness Protection Act

    Wilderness Protection Act
    The Wilderness Protection Act saved 9.1 million acres of forestland from industrial development. Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act on September 3, 1964.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act provided major funding for American public schools. This was signed into law in April 11, 1965 by President Johnson who thought that full educational opportunity should be the nation's number 1 goal. This act offered new grants to schools to serve low income students. Also gave these schools textbooks and library books and scholarships for low income college students.

    Medicare
    Medicare was created to offset the costs of health care for the nation's elderly. President Johnson passed this act on July 30, 1965 and he passed this because this program provided hospital and medical insurance for Americans 65 and older. This helped because many people did not work after the age of 65 and they could not pay for their hospital and medical appointments.

    Medicaid
    Also signed medicaid into law on the same day as medicare. Medicaid was signed into law by President Johnson on July 30, 1965 and medicaid was a federally funded program that offers health coverage to low income people.
  • The Voting Rights Act

    The Voting Rights Act
    The Voting Rights Act banned literacy tests and other discriminatory methods of denying suffrage to African Americans. This act was passed August 5, 1965 by President Johnson who thought that the african americans were being treated unfair. All of the southern states were not letting any african americans vote. Many violence came out before this act had come out. The murder of many african american activists and when the state troopers harmed the harmless marchers in Selma, AL.
  • Omnibus Housing Act

    Omnibus Housing Act
    An Omnibus Housing Act provided funds to construct low-income housing. The August 10, 1965 Act authorized nearly $8 billion toward building housing and providing rental units for low and middle-income families.
  • The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities

    The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities
    The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities used public money to fund artists and galleries. On September 29, 1965 President Johnson passed this act also. The National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities asked 20 million dollars in a start up fund from the white house. The white house agreed to give the money to them seperate some to the Arts and some the the Humanities.

    The Immigration Act
    The Immigration Act ended discriminatory quotas based on ethnic origin. This act was passed on October 3, 1965 by President Johnson. Johnson signed this act because he criticized the old Immigration Act.
  • Air and Water Quality Acts

     Air and Water Quality Acts
    Congress tightened pollution controls with stronger Air and Water Quality Acts. President Johnson passed this act on November 21, 1967 and he passed it because he was getting tired of chemical companies and oil refineries dumping all of their waste into a nearby river or lake.
