September 11 Terrorist Attacks
A series of airline hijacks and suicide attacks commited by 19 militants, which are associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda targets the U.S. This was the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. Some 2,750 people were killed in New York, 184 died at the Pentagon, and 40 died in Pennsylvania. In addition, 400 police officers and firefighters were killed. -

War With Afghanistan
Internal conflict in Afghanistan starting in 2001 that was triggered because of the bombing of the world trade center. It consisted of 3 phases: Tapling the Taliban, U.S. strategy of defeating Taliban militarily and rebuilding core institutions of the Afghan State, and turn to classic counterinsurgency doctrine, which began in 2008. -

A previous reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The law increased the federal government's role in education, especially being able to hold schools accountable for the acadmeic performance of students. -

A resolution that the congress stood around Pesident George W. Bush to defend against Iraq with certain military planning. This resolution was officially enacted on October 16, 2002. -
Space Shuttle Columbia Self-Destructs
On this day at 8:00 CST, residents of Texas witnessed the once mighty space shuttle columbia disintegrate into a 12,000 mph. fireball. Seven members who were on the space shuttle died that day. -

The 9/11 Commission Report was created in 2002 by Bush. It was charged with preparing a complete report of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It includes U.S. preparedness and immediate response, and with providing recommendations to guard against future attacks. -

Bush wins against John Kerry with many votes. For those that didn't vote for him, Bush pledged that he would work hard at earning their trust and support by helping America and its citizens anyway he can. -
Hurricane Katrina
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. When it did, it had a category of 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. It brought 100 to 140 mile per hour winds stretching 400 miles across. It led to massive flooding and hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were displaced from their homes. -

The democratic party won 230 out of 435 seats in the November 7th elections, in the House of Representatives, and holding a 51-49 margin in the Senate. A total six Senate Republican incumbents were defeated. -

The oldest former president who lived to be 93 before he died. He had a wife, 3 sons, a daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. -
New Troops In Iraq
Bush recognized that the progress of the war is unacceptable to the citizens of America and is unacceptable to himself. He decided that the more than 20,000 additional troops will work along-side Iraqi units. -
Obama elected; Bush Bids Farewell
Obama gets elected as president when he ran against McCain and won. Bush gives a farewell speech to all American citizens stating that this is a time of hope. Bush leaves office for Obama after serving 2 terms well loved by America.
