    The 2000 election candidates were George W. Bush and Dick Cheney along with other 3rd party candidates. While Bush won, it was not as easily won like previous elections had been. On January 20, 2001, George W. Bush took office as the 43rd President of the United States.
  • Faith Based Office

    Faith Based Office
    Bush felt it would be important to have a group in the White House that was faith based. The new office was very true to the "In God We Trust" motto that the U.S. had lived by for years. In this position, they would be more willing to tackle issues in the community.
  • September 11 Terrorist Attacks

    September 11 Terrorist Attacks
    The September 11 attacks were a series of attacks set up by Al-Qaeda terrorist. Four airplanes were hijacked by multiple terrorist where they would end up destroying both World Trade Center buildings in New York City, a section of the Pentagon, and an attempted attack on the White House. Together, these attacks would reach almost 3,000 deaths . This forced the White House and the U.S. citizens to take action against terrorism at home.

    George W. Bush Ground Zero Speech
    President Bush would fly out to ground zero three days after the terrorist attacks to give the U.S. citizens a speech. His speech was not only given to inform the people of what happened, but to inspire them and give hope. He would also vaguely discuss how he planned on stopping any future terrorism.

    The war in Afghanistan started soon after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Much of the fighting was in attempting to find and eliminate Osama Bin-Laden from committing anymore terrorism. He would not be found until May 2011 and the fighting in Afghanistan would not stop until December 28, 2014.

    The No Child Left Behind Act allows several federal education programs that are administered by the states. This is also where we see a lot of modern day standardized testing in schools. This would allow the states to see if schools were doing there jobs in teaching students basic skills.

    U.S. Congress Authorizes the Declaration of War with Iraq
    This decision was made so that the U.S. military would have formal authority to move forward with their attack on Iraq. Many of the Congress and Senate men and women that had to vote to make this decision were not sure as to whether this was the right action. The vote passed and the war lasted from March 20, 2003 to December 18, 2011.

    Space Shuttle Columbia Explodes
    The Space Shuttle Columbia was a mission launched on February 1, 2003 which exploded shortly after lift-off. The crew consisted of 6 professional astronauts and 1 teacher who was chosen out of many to be apart of the launch. The explosion was later found out to have been caused by damage to one of the wings.

    On March 17, 2003, President Bush addressed the nation to inform them about the war with Iraq and the purpose behind such actions. He also informed the people of the actions of Saddam Hussein and how they were trying to find and stop him and his war path. In the end of this speech, he reminded the people that there was nothing to worry about because he would solve the problem to the best of his ability.

    The goal of this operation was to find and capture Iraqi President Saddam Hussein with as little to no casualties occurring. The U.S. military conducted on the Iraq city of ad-Dawr. The operation took place on December 13, 2003 and was successful in capturing Hussein.

    This was the official report on what occurred on September 11, 2001. The report is also meant to provide information to the public on what to do if further home bound terrorism was to happen again. The report was released on July 22, 2004 and is available in book stores and online.

His promise to America was to continue change and what he felt was best for the safety and growth of America. He would stay in office until Obama's election win in 2008.

    Hurricane Katrina started on August 23, 2005 and occurred on the Gulf Coast. Many families, houses, and other personal belongings were damaged and lost for years. The damages to property added up to $108 Billion but many families could not recover.

    Chief Justice Roberts was appointed September 29, 2005 and became the 17th Chief Justice in the Supreme Court. He was nominated by President Bush after the prior Chief Justice died. Bush's goal was to refocus the thoughts of the Supreme Court chairs.

    After his capture in 2003's Operation Red Dawn, Saddam Hussein faced trial in his August 21, 2006 trial. He was tried for his war crimes and mass genocide. After his trial, he was sentenced to death and 30 days later, killed.

    Democratic Party Takes Control of Both Houses
    In November 7, 2006, both the House of Representatives and Senate seats were taken by democrats. Winning 230 seats in the House of Representatives and the remaining 2 seats in the Senate created a strong democratic opposition to Bush's republic idea. Republicans would not win both houses until 2016's election.

    Former President G. Ford Dies
    The 38th president of the U.S., Gerald Ford, dies December 26, 2006. He served from 1974-1977 after previous president, Richard Nixon, exited office. He died at the age of 93 in Rancho Mirage, CA.

    After years of fighting, Bush decided to help increase support and security in Baghdad and other cities in Iraq. He was also trying to keep other invading countries from taking over Iraq by protecting their borders. These troops would not be the last group of troops sent over to Iraq before the fighting ended.

    Obama Elected, Bush Bids Farewell
    After Bush's 2 terms as president, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States. He would go on to lead the Democratic party from 2008-2017 until the next election. Obama would do things such as the Affordable Health Care Act and the killing of Osama Bin-Laden.
