Prenatal Development Timeline Project

  • Conception and Implantation

After a woman starts to ovulate, her ovaries release an ovum that can be fertilized for 12 to 24 hours as it travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Once the ovum is fertilized with a sperm cell it combines to become a zygote. It takes about 3-4 days for the zygote to move to the lining of the uterus, where it attaches to the uterine wall and starts to grow.
  • First trimester

    Conception-12 weeks
This usually is the first three months of pregnancy and this is when the baby will change from a group of cells to a fetus that will slowly begin to develop face features.
    - Month 1 (weeks 1 through 4)
    - Month 2 (weeks 5 through 8)
    -Month 3 (weeks 9 through 12)
  • Month 1 (weeks 1 through 4)

As the zygote grows, the amniotic sac forms around it and acts as a cushion. The placenta also develops and is used to transfer nutrients to the baby, as well as, waste. The baby´s face slowly develops with large dark circles for eyes, the mouth, lower jaw and throat. Not only this, but so are the baby´s blood cells and the heart, and by the end of the first month, the baby with be 1/4 inches long (smaller than a grain of rice).
  • Month 2 (weeks 5 through 8)

The baby´s ears, limbs, and toes are growing with it´s facial features. The neural lobe is well formed now , the digestive tract and sensory organs being to develop as well, and bones start to replace it´s cartilage. The head is almost twice the size of it´s body and at about 6 weeks, the heartbeat can start being detected. At about the 8th week, your little embryo is finally a fetus and is about the size of a raspberry.
