Prenatal Development Timeline

  • Conception

    Conception
    This is when the sperm is released to go find the egg in the ovary, and be the first one to fertilize it. After the first few days, or even maybe a week, a sperm makes it to the egg and fertilizes it.
  • Blastocyst

    Blastocyst
    Once the egg is fertilized, It is transformed into a blastocyst, which is a cluster of dividing cells. This blastocyst makes it way to the uterus while slowly being a zygote through the fallopian tubes.
  • Embryo

    Embryo
    Once the blastocyst has been sitting in the uterus for several days, it is going to implant into the inner lining of the uterus. It will continue to make new cells. 10-12 days later these cells are considered an embryo.
  • Fetus

    Fetus
    Around the end of the 8th week since fertilization, The embryo is considered a fetus. This is around 10 weeks into the pregnancy.
  • End of 1st trimester

    End of 1st trimester
    Towards the end of the first trimester, the baby will be around 1/2 oz in weight, genitals develop, fingernails begin to grow, teeth buds form, face is more defined, and intestines are developed in the abdomen.
  • Beginning of 2nd trimester

    Beginning of 2nd trimester
    This is around the 13-16 week. The baby will begin to move, but not enough for the mother to feel. This is when the babies sex will become apparent, and they can produce urine and swallow.
  • Mid 2nd trimester

    Mid 2nd trimester
    At week 22-23, Your baby has nails, fingerprints, eyebrows, lashes, and maybe even some hair. This is when the baby becomes a lot more active, and their heartbeat is heard with a stethoscope. At this point, the baby is around 7 1/2 in long, and weighs 1lb.
  • End of 2nd trimester

    End of 2nd trimester
    This is the 25-27 week of pregnancy, and we are coming to the end of the second trimester. Your baby will being lung development, and will finally have regular sleep and wake patterns. Weighs around 1 1/3lbs and 8in long.
  • Start of 3rd trimester.

    Start of 3rd trimester.
    This is week 28-30. The babies eyes will begin to partially open and close, and their central nervous system has some control over breathing and body temperature. Your baby will begin to kick and stretch.
  • Mid 3rd trimester.

    Mid 3rd trimester.
    Mid 3rd trimester is around 32-35 weeks. This is when a lot of major development is finished up for the baby. Rapid weight gain begins, and lanugo begins to fall off. Baby develops breathing motions, responds to light, and the skin is pink and smooth. At the end of mid third, the baby will be around a foot long and weighs 4 1/2lbs.
  • End of 3rd trimester - End of pregnancy

    End of 3rd trimester - End of pregnancy
    At the very end of pregnancy (36-40 weeks), Your baby will being to shift its head down to prepare for labor. The baby will also gain around 1/2lb each week until you give birth. The babies brain, lungs, and liver are still developing, however the brain will double in size. At week 39 the baby will officially be full term and until then, Be ready for that baby!
