Prenatal Development Timeline

  • Month 1

    Month 1
Tiny limb buds appear, which will grow into arms and legs. The heart and lungs form, and by the 22nd day, the heart starts to beat. The neural tube forms, which becomes the brain and spinal cord.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
At two months pregnant, your baby's face continues its development. Buds that will eventually be limbs begin to develop. Organs such as the brain, sensory organs, and the digestive tract begin to take shape. The cartilage in the embryo begins to be replaced by bone.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
On the inside, your little one's intestines and musculature system are taking shape. Some bones may start to harden, but the backbone is soft. On the outside, your baby's hands and feet are growing tiny fingers and toes, which may even have the beginnings of fingernails and toenails at three months pregnant.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
Hair, eyelids, eyelashes, and nails become well developed. The heartbeat is now clearly audible through a Doppler instrument. The teeth become denser, and the baby begins to stretch, yawn and make other movements. The reproductive organs are now visible on an ultrasound.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
You may begin to feel your baby move, since they are developing muscles and exercising them. This first movement is called quickening. By the end of the fifth month of pregnancy, your baby is about 10 inches long and weighs from 1/2 to 1 pound.
  • Month 6

    Month 6
During the 6th month, your fetus starts to develop blood cells, taste buds, eyebrows and eyelashes.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
During this month, your precious little one is opening their eyes for the first time. They even have eyelashes now. Exploring the power of their new muscles, they spend days making faces and nights having their very first dreams.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
The fetus continues to mature and develop reserves of body fat. The brain develops most rapidly during this time. The fetus can see and hear most stimuli. Most internal systems are well-developed, but the lungs may still be immature.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
Reflexes become more coordinated, allowing the baby to respond to sounds, blink, grasp, and turn his or her head. The baby may move less during the last few weeks and will move into a position for birth, with the head down near the birth canal.
