Prenatal Development

  • Period: to

    Weeks 1-2

    The Mother is actually not pregnant. During these first weeks the Ob-gym counts pregnancy as 40 weeks from the start if the last menstrual cycle.
  • Period: to

    Weeks 3-4

    The mother may experience a missed period and cramping. She may also find out that shes pregnant by the end of the fourth week or even later. Pregnancy test measure HCG hormone levels.
  • Period: to

    weeks 5-6

    The mother by this time should have missed a period. Her breast may become tinder and enlarged. She will experience extreme triedness, morning sickness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation and mood swings.
  • Period: to

    weeks 7-8

    The mother will continue to experience the symptoms from weeks 5 and 6. Some are more frequent urination due to the uterus pushing on the bladder and increased heartrate due to increased cardiac volume.
  • Period: to

    week 10

    The symptoms from weeks 5-8 may continue. The mother may gain 2-4 pounds. The mothers breast may feel fuller.
  • Period: to

    week 11

    The mother will experience the same symptoms as week 11. Between 12 and 14 weeks, the mother will begin to hear the baby's heartbeat with a doppler ultrasound. Also pregnancy care begins.
  • Period: to

    week 12

    The mother will experience the same symptoms as weeks 10 and 11. The mother may still have a missed period, breasts may still be tinder and enlarged, and morning sickness may still continue. Also pregnancy care will still continue.
  • Period: to

    week 14

    The mothers morning sickness should start to disappear. Dark spots on the mothers skin may form. The mother may begin to have sensitive gums, leg cramps, and clumsiness.

    The mother will continue to experience symptoms from week 14. The mother may have sensitive gums, reduced fatigue and loose ligaments.
  • weeks 18-19

    weeks 18-19
    The mothers abdomen may become apparent. She may experience backaches, heartburn, and trouble sleeping. Also Stretch marks may appear and the mothers body.
  • weeks 20-21

    weeks 20-21
    The mother will continue to experience symptoms from weeks 18-19. She may begin to have swelling in her hands and feet. Also the mother may begin to feel the baby in her stomach.
  • week 22

    week 22
    The mother will begin to have hip,grain,and abdomen. She may feel as if she has shortness of breath. The mothers baby button may poke out.
  • Period: to

    week 24

    The mother may experience trouble sleeping. Also she may feel fetal movements which is the baby kicking, bumping and some may be viable to others. The mother may gain by this time a total between 10 and 12 pounds.
  • weeks 28-29

    weeks 28-29
    The mothers increased abdomen may affect her posture. Her breasts may also begin to leak. She will also continue to grow stretch marks.
  • weeks 31-32

    weeks 31-32
    The mother will begin to have backaches and fatigue. She will also experience leg cramps and a shortness of breath.
  • week 34

    week 34
    The mother will continue to experience symptoms from weeks 31- 32. She will experience pelvic pain. The fetal kicks of the baby will begin to interrupt rest. Also Braxton-hicks contractions begin.
  • weeks 36-37

    weeks 36-37
    The mother will still feel stretches and movement of the baby. The braxton-hicks contractions will continue. She may start to have insomnia.
  • Period: to

    weeks 38-40

    The mother will continue to have the symptoms from weeks 36-37. Her total weight gain should be around 25-35 pounds. She may begin to feel decreased pressure on her lungs and organs.
