Prenatal Development

  • Month 1

    SIZE - baby is the size of a pin head -egg attaches to the lining of the uterus
    -this is a critical stage for brain & spinal cord development
    -internals organs and circulatory system beings to form
    -baby's heart starts to beat
  • Month 2

    SIZE - 1/4 in. or 6 mm -face, eyes, ears, & limbs take shape
    -bones are forming
  • Month 3

    SIZE - about 1 inch (25mm) -Nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form
    -Buds for all 20 baby teeth appear
    -Fingers and toes are almost done developing
    -All organs are present but still immature
  • Month 4

    SIZE - about 3 inches (7.6 cm) & 1 ounce (28g) -Can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, & move around
    -Facial features become more clear
  • Month 5

    SIZE - about 6.5-7 inches (16-18 cm) & 4-5 ounces (113-142 g) -Hair, eyelashes, & eyebrows appear
    -Teeth continue to develop
    -Organs mature
    -Becomes more active
  • Month 6

    SIZE - about 8-10 inches (21-25 cm) & 8-12 ounces (227-340 g) -Fat deposits under skin, fetus appears wrinkled
    -Breathing movements begin
  • Month 7

    SIZE - about 10-20 inches ( 25-31 cm) & 1.5-2 lbs. (680-907 g) -Periods of activity & periods of rest
  • Month 8

    SIZE - about 14-16 inches (36-41 cm) & 2.5-3 lbs. (1.0-1.4 kg) -Rapid weight gain continues
    -May react to loud noises with a reflex jerking action
    -Moves into a head-down position
  • Month 9

    SIZE - about 17-18 inches (43-46 cm) & 5-6 lbs. (2.3-2.7 kg) -Weight gain continues
    -Skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue
    -Movements decrease as the fetus has less room to move around
    -Acquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mother's blood
    -Descends into pelvis, ready for birth
