Pregnancy Timeline

  • Month 1

    During month 1 the baby is in the zygote stage. At 2 weeks the baby is the size of a pinhead. Egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. This is a critical stage for brain and spinal cord development and internal organs and circulatory system start to form. Heart begins to beat in month 1.
  • Month 2

    Baby is now about the size of 1/4 of an inch. Face, eyes, ears, and limbs take shape. The bones are also beginnning to form.
  • Month 3

    Now is about 1 inch long and nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids begin to form. Buds for the 20 teeth appear. Fingers and toes almost complete and all organs are present but not fully developed.
  • Month 4

    About 3 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce. Facial features become clearer and baby can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move around.
  • Month 5

    About 6.5-7 inches long and weighs about 4-5 ounces. Hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows appear. Teeth continue to develop, organs are maturing, and the baby is becoming more active.
  • Month 6

    About 8-10 inches long and weighs 8-12 ounces. Fat deposits under the skin and breathing movements start.
  • Month 7

    About 10-12 inches long and weighs about 1.5-2 pounds. Baby has periods of activity followed by periods of rest.
  • Month 8

    About 14-16 inches long and weighs about 2.5-3 pounds. Rapid weight gain continues and baby may react to loud noises with a reflex jerking reaction. Moves into the head down position.
  • Month 9

    About 17-18 inches and weighs 5-6 pounds. Weight gain continues and skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue. Movement decreases because the baby doesn't have as much room to move around. Gains disease-fighting antibodies from the mother. Desends into the pelvis and ready for birth.
