`at two weeks the baby is the size of a pinhead
`egg attaches to the uterus
`critical stage brain and spinal cord development
`internal organs and the circulatory system starts to form
`heart begins to beat -
2nd Month
~beginning of the month, about 1/4 inch long
~face, eyes, ears, and limbs take shape
~bones begin to form -
3rd Month
-beginning of the month, about 1 inch long
-nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form
-buds for all 20 baby teeth appear
-fingers and toes almost complete
-all organs present but still immature -
4th Month
`beginning of the month, about 3 inches long
`can suck thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move around
`facial features become clearer -
5th Month
~beginning of the month, about 7 inches long & 5 ounces
~hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows appear
~teeth continue to develop
~organs are maturing
~becomes more active -
6th Month
-as the month begins, 8-10 inches long & 8-12 ounces
-fat deposits under the skin, but fetus appears wrinkled
-breathing movements begin -
7th Month
`as the month begins, about 10-12 inches long & 1.5-2 pounds
`has periods of activity followed by periods of rest and quiet -
8th Month
~as the month begins, 14-16 inches long & 2.5-3 pounds
~rapid weight gain continues
~may react to loud noises
~moves into a head-down position -
9th Month
-as the month begins, about 17-18 inches long & 5-6 pounds
-weight gain continues
-skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue
-movements decrease
-acquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mother's blood
-descends into pelvis, ready for birth
