    First Trimester: Week 1 - Week 4

In the first few weeks a primitive face will take form with large dark circle for eyes. The mouth, lower jaw and throat are developing. By the end of the first monty, the baby is about 1/4 inch long

    The baby's facial features continue to develop. Each ear begins as a little fold of skin at the side of the head. Tiny buds that eventually grow into arms and legs are forming. The neural tubes (brain, spinal cord and other neural tissues of the central system) is well formed now. After the 8th week, your baby is called a foetus instead of an embryo By the end of the second month, the baby is about 1 inch long

    The baby's arms, hands, fingers feet and toes are fully formed. At this stage the baby is starting to explore a bit by doing things like opening and closing fists and mouth. Fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop and the external ears are formed. By the end of the third month , the baby is fully formed. all the organs and limbs are present and will continue to develop in order to become functional. At the end of the third month, the baby is about 4 inches long.

    Second Trimester: Week 13 - Week 16

    The baby's heartbeat may now be audible through an instrument called a doppler. The fingers and toes are well - defined. Eyelids, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails and ahir are formed. Teeth and bones become denser, The nervous system is starting to function. The reproducing organs and genitalia are now fully developed and doctors can see on the ultrasound if you are having a boy or a girl. By the end of the fourth month, the baby is about 6 inches long.

    Second Trimester: Week 17 - Week 20

    At this stage the mother may begin to feel the baby moving around. The baby is developing muscles and exercing them. Hair begins to grow on baby's head. The baby's shoulders, back and temples are covered by soft fine hair called lanugo. This hair protects the baby and is usually shed at the end of the baby's first week of life. the baby's skin is covered with a whitish coating called vernix caseosa.

    The baby's skin is reddish in colour, wrinkled and veins are visible through the baby's translucent skin. Baby's finger and toe prints are visible. Baby respond to sounds by moving or increasing the pulse.

    During this stage, the baby will continue to grow and mature. the lungs are close to being fully developed at this point.     In this final month, the mother could go into labor at any time, they may notice that the baby moves less due to the tight space. At this point the baby's position may have changed to prepare for birth. Ideally, the baby is head down in the uterus. The mother may feel uncomfortable in this final stretch of time as the bay drops down into the pelvis and prepares for birth. The baby is about 18 to 20 inches long.
