  • Johann Amos Comenius

    Known as the father of modern education. Made reforms that would focus on thinking skills and practical learning. He also mentioned the importance of education for all children.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseua

    A philosopher who believed in the natural goodness of children and that education nutried the qualities. He wrote a book about how child education should be approached on individual developments
  • Johann Henrich Pestalozzi

    Pestalozzi used nature to help study part of the curriculum. He believed that good education meant the development of the senses and believed that it is better to teach children in groups than one on one. Pestalozzi’s ideas influenced ECE practices and emphasized the importance of individualized instruction.
  • Friedrich Wilhelm Froebel

    Friedrich was of the major contributors to ECE. He's known as the founding father of kindergarten. His childhood was very rough and he wanted future generations to be different from how he grew up. He wanted to focus on kids having fun but also learning new things at the same time.

    The first kindergarten was created in 1837 in Blakenburg, Germany. kindergarten is an important skill where kids learn basic knowledge and learn small things that have to go with their social, emotional, and problem solving skills.
  • nursery schools

    Nursery Schools occurred when they decided to respond to social and economic conditions during the Industrial Revolution. Parents were always working finding it harder for them to take care of their children so nursery schools gave parents a place to send their children who would still get education and the care they need.
  • Rudolf Steiner

    The steiner theroy is childern and how they should learn with their head, hands, and hearts. He believes that by experiencing through observations and curriculum that people will be in a rich and enjoyable environment giving them better needs in their education
  • A.S. Neill

    Founder of Summerhill School in England, the school became a symbol of his progressive educational philosophy. he allowed students to work more independently and in their way and influenced how we think about education today. His work influenced ECE by people seeing a student and child-centered approach while learning
  • Sputnik

    The first satellite that was launched into space was the Sputnik which included schools and lower levels of education to introduce science and math. This then increased the funding for children while learning newer science and technology
  • John Locke

    John Locke was one to write about children and their education. He would write about people and their environments which ended up based on their environment growing up.
  • social reform

    The social reforms allowed easy access to education for all ages. The desire for social reform led to the creation of Head Start. The different reforms have helped shape policies and practices to prioritize education and well well-being of educational needs.
  • Robert Owen

    Robert was an entrepreneur and social reformer who also established the New Lanarl Mills in Scottland. He believed in providing nurturing and stimulating environments for children in education.
  • media and technology

    media and technology is the advancements in schooling. Allows students to use brain development and neuroscience because over time it has become very involved.
  • High Scope

    High Scope was the issue of poverty in schools and to focus attention on cognitive aspects of learning. The two projects "Planned Variation" and "Project Follow" these allowed people to notice the physical environments and its helped make a better environment

    Head Start began as an act on the social action on “war on poverty”. Head Start programs wanted to show children that anyone can be a successful student. Over time ECE has shown that there is way more to education there poverty. Now Head Start has allowed way more inclusion in classrooms.
  • DAP

    DAP stands for developmentally appropriate practice. It's an approach to teaching kids to take accountability, for unique needs, and abilities for a child. It allows others to focus on creating a supportive environment where children can take time and know they can learn at their own pace. This has made better learning practices for students overall.
  • Standards

    standards when working with people can allow children to get the better education that they need. If standards weren't set for teachers the chances of students getting the right education would be low. This also would not allow students to feel like they can get the education they need.
  • Maria Montessori

    Maria was an Italian physician and educator who made very good contributions to ECE overall. She developed an educational approach that focuses on the natural development of children which is known as the Montessori method, she thought if students were put into a prepared environment children could engage in self-directed learning and exploration.
  • No Child Left Behind

    In 2002 the act was reauthorized and became a thing where schools would be held responsible if there is a lack of education and where they'd be held responsible for their actions if the education was not performed correctly
