The Dual Alliance is Formed
In 1879, the alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary was formed. This is significant because this means whenever either one was being attacked, the other would help support. This is the first form of an alliance system where one country would support the other country when in need. -
The Triple Alliance is Formed
Before the Triple Alliance was formed, Bismarck already formed the Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary. Three years after in 1882, Italy decided to join in with the two other countries forming the Triple Alliance. This is significant because now the three groups would work together to defend each other.
The Triple Alliance is when a group of three form an agreement to protect each other from other enemies. -
Kaiser Wilhelm II and Resignation of Bismarck
In 1890, Kaiser Wilhelm II became the ruler of Germany, and he forced Bishmarck to resign. Kaiser Wihelm II did not want to share his power instead he wanted more. Kaiser Wilhelm II is an example of nationalism because, nationalism is the feeling of superiority over other countries. Later on, Wilhelm let his nation’s treaty with Russia fail. This event is significant because the alliance between Germany and Russia fell and later on Russia made other alliances. -
Alliance of Russia and France
In 1890 when German let the treaty between Russian and them lapse, Russian responded by creating a defensive military alliance with France. With the alliance between Russia and France, Russia would be supported by France if Germany decides to attack Russia. -
Conflicts Over Morocco
In 1905 and again in 1911, Germany and France nearly fought over who would control Morocco, in Northern Africa. Most of Europe suported France, so Germany backed down. This event is significant because it shows how imperialis,expanding an empire by taking over weaker countries, to competition and conflict between European countries. -
The Creation of the Triple Entente
In 1907, when British found out that Germany was having a tremendous shipbuilding program to make their naval army equal to British's fleet.
In response, the British formed an entente/alliance with France and Russia creating the Triple Entente.
When the Germans were having a shipbuilding program, that is an example of imperialism because that is increasing the power of the country through military force.
This is significant because this means the three group would not attack each other. -
Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
In 1908, Austria annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina. This happened because tension between Serbia and Austria steadily increased and the Serbs continuously vowed to take Bosnia and Herzegovina away from Austria. -
Rise of Militarism
By 1914, everyone created a military army. The policy of glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war
was known as militarism. This is significant because people began to group together to prepare for battle against their enemies. -
The Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife was shot point-blank range while driving to Sarajevo, Bosnia. The fact that makes this event significant is that the killer was a Serbian, Austria used this excuse to punish Serbia. -
The War Begins
World War 1 begins with Austria and Russia attacking each other. This is significant because this led to many other battles that took place in World War I. -
Germany Declares War on Russia
In 1914, the Austrians and the Serbs were battling consistently. Russia was allies with Serbia and knowing that Germany was allies with Austria, the Russians decided to send troops to help Serbia and declared war against the Germans on August 1, 1914. This is significant because this is brings more battles among groups. -
Britain declares war on Germany
On August 4, 1914, Britain declares war on Germany. This event is significant because this brings much of Europe now locked in battle because there were other battles taking place.
