He will become the longest serving pope in the Church's history. He works to bridge relations between Catholics and Jews, as well working with Muslims and Buddhists, and will serve as an inspiration for the fall of Communism.

Mother Teresa recieved the award in recognition of her Missionaries of Charity group, dedicated to helping the "poorest of the poor" in third world countries. Teresa came under fire for the conditions of both those who worked for and lived in the organizations properties.

    Mehmet Ali Agca, a member of the Turkish ultra-nationalist group Grey Wolves, shoots Pope John Paul II four times at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. He survies the attack. Two bystandars are also hit, but they survive as well. Interestingly, the Pope asked people to pray for his would-be killer, and said he had sincerely forgive Agca. The two would later form a friendship, and the pontif would see him, and his family on several occasions.
