Plessy v. Ferguson
In 1896 Homer Plessy sat in a whites only railway car and was arrested. In Plessy vs. The State of Louisiana, Plessy's lawyers argued that he was denied his 13th and 14th constitutional rights, which was equal treatment under the law. Judge John Howard Ferguson ruled that Louisiana had the right to regulate railroad companies while they operated within state boundaries. Plessy was convicted and sentenced to pay a $25 fine. -
Brown v. Board of Education
The Court declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. That decision overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision that happened 58 years earlier. This landmark started the civil rights movement. -
Title IV
Title IV helped to strengthen education resources for colleges and universities. It helped provide financial assistance for students who where pursuing a higher education. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act wanted to meet four goals.
1) Services available to those who need them
2) Decisions made are fair and appropriate.
3) Have specific management and auditing requirements.
4) Federal help to educate handicap-able children. -
Pyler v. Doe
The Supreme Court of the United States prohibited the denial of funding for education to undocumented immigrant children. The supreme court ruled that it was a violation of the fourteenth amendment.
