  • Seaside Studies

Lewes visited the Devon Coast to write about marine biology. This led to an important development and growth in Victorian popular science. During his time there he studied a mollusk and was able to connect it and the universe. This discovery for him “revealed “how the great whole is indissolubly linked with its minutes parts.”(Autumn 1981, 22)

  • The Physiology of Common Life

G.H. Lewes first published an article on physiology in 1859 in a magazine. He then came out with a book in 1860 “The Physiology of Common Life”. He covers things such as diets for dogs, the way sugar can affect teeth, allergies, etc. He developed further knowledge about the human body which led to many great discoveries after his death. A quote from Lewes “because the sphere of the Known is always becoming larger and larger, we always hope that the Unknown is not also the Unknowable”. (1862)
  • Studies in Animal Life

In 1862 G.H. Lewes published Studies in Animal Life. He explains that life is everywhere, even down to the mold that covers our food. The trees, plants, flowers, and everything else. Lewes said “the life that stirs within us is also the life that stirs within them”. (1862) Charles Darwn and Lewes were acquainted and got together to discuss relations between humans and animals. Lewes determined that while animals were intellectual creatures that weren’t necessarily on the same level as humans.
