Changing states of matter

The Changing Properties of Water

  • Period: to

Take ice cube out of the freezer

This first stage, we will take the SOLID ice cube out of the freezing freezer! This is the process of taking it from its freezing point to a warmer temperature in the house.
  • Period: to

Place the ice cube/cubes in a cup beside the stove

Second, we're going to place the ice cube in a cup and set it by a warm stove top.
  • Checking the heating process

Make sure the stove top is heated up to its high temperature
  • Boil the water

When boiling water the water will begin to bubble and get really hot
  • Period: to

    Wait for 10 minutes

After waiting for 10 minutes, we begin to realize that the ice is slowly but sure melting. This is the solid state of water (ice cube) changing to its liquid state (water).
  • Period: to

    Double checking newly formed liquid

Make sure the solid ice is completely melted into liquid
  • Pour the cup of liquid water into pot

Pour the liquid water into the pot on the heated stove top
  • Period: to

    Wait for 25 minutes

The boiling water sends steam out of the pot. This steam is considered GAS!
  • Experiment with the gas

Swift your hand through it, smell it, look through it. The liquid made a vapor.
  • GAS!

Gas is the air vapor form of liquid. We took frozen water (solid ice cube), melted it until it became a liquid (liquid water), heated the liquid up to form a gas (steam).
