Peter ascends the throne
In 1682, Peter ascended the throne as a co-ruler, at the young age of ten, with his brother. At the time the throne of Russia was very fragile but Peter was to greatly impact Russia. -
War with the Ottomans
During this time period Peter the Great started a war with the Ottomans. He used the skills that he learned from his trip to Western Europe studying military hardware, docks, and shipyards. -
Founding St. Petersburg
In 1703 on the Gulf of Finland, Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg which became the capital city of Russia. In this city he copied European monarchs. "The founding of St. Petersburg went beyond establishing a central imperial court, however; it symbolized a new Western orientation of Russia and Peter's determination to hold his position on the Baltic Coast." (Craig 614) -
Administrative Colleges
Peter looked towards Swedish institutions, colleges, to imitate in his reorganization of his domestic administration. The colleges he created looked over matters of the collection of taxes, foreign relations, war, and economic affairs. -
The Case of Aleksei, Peters Son
Peters son had never shown any great intellegince or ambition, however, Peter had grown to be very jealous of his offspring. "Peter became convinced by late 1717 that his court opponents looked to Aleksei as a focus for possible sedition while Russia remained at war with Sweden." (Craig 614) Peter personally interogatted his son, he was condemned to death and on June 26, 1718 under mysterious circumstances died. -
Abolishing of patriarch
After Peter got rid of the role of the bishop who was head of the church (patriarch) he created the Holy Synod, a governmental department consisting of several bishops, in which the procurator general was in charge. -
Table of Ranks
Peter created a table of ranks which evaluated a persons standing based on social postion and privelage, along with their ranking in bureacracy or military. "Peter thus made the social standing of individual boyars a function of their willingness to serve the central state." (Craig 615) -
The Death of Peter the Great
During this year Peter the Great died. Although he was known for his decisive actions during his throne, at the time of his death he had still not chosen a successor. For over thirty years Russia was still determining who the ruler was. Peter left Russia modern, but not in a stable state.
